STEP 1: Disassembly & disconnecting the antenna from the stock head unit.

I rate the difficulty of this step as easy if you have the Saab radio removal tool. Since I did not have such a tool, and my efforts to construct one failed, my experience with this part has to be rated at mildly annoying.

The XM Commander's control/display panel will be installed where the ashtray is: Right in front of the shift lever. The ashtray must be removed which is a pain. Here are the steps to get it out. You'll need some decent finger dexterity and a couple flathead screwdrivers.

1. Pop out the control buttons for the front heated seats.
2. Reach in through these empty button holes and pop out the ACC control unit.
3. Use the parking brake and put the car in Gear 1 (Auto) or shift the stick back in 4th.
4. Remove the tray portion of the ashtray by pulling it straight out.
5. Prise up on the bottom half of the ashtray with one screwdriver, reach in through the ACC hole and press down on the top of the ashtray housing while using the other screwdriver to prise the top of the ashtray from the front. It should pop out pretty easily then.

NOTE: If you are one of the lucky few that have the rubber "cubby" pocket instead of the ashtray, opening this slot should be a piece of cake.
Ashtray out.

If you can, I highly recommend pulling the radio box out of the dash. The COAX-style antenna wire connects to the back of the radio box using a plastic clip. If you cannot pull your it, use a screwdriver and CAREFULLY press the connector out of the back of the unit. This will take some careful work and it will break the tabs on the antenna connector. I did this, and was able to get it disconnected without destroying anything except some skin on my knuckles.

Once free of the head unit, the antenna connector looks like this (fuzzy I know...sorry.)

At this point, let's leave the dash alone and get the XM receiver mounted.
